Katy TX community news in 2026 is dominated by one consistent story — the school system keeps getting stronger and growing faster than anyone expected. Katy ISD’s fifth consecutive #1 Houston school district ranking, two new elementary schools that opened in August 2025, a new junior high in planning, and the launch of Legacy Virtual High School in Fall 2026 are the most significant community developments for the families who choose Katy specifically for its schools. Beyond education, Elyson’s continued expansion and the broader I-10 corridor’s commercial growth are shaping daily life across the community.

Katy ISD — the #1 school district story of 2026
Katy Independent School District has been ranked the #1 Best School District in the Houston area by Niche for the fifth consecutive year in 2026. Specifically, Katy ISD earned an A+ overall grade, plus A+ scores for Teachers, College Prep, and Administration, and ‘A’ marks for Academics, Diversity, and Clubs and Activities. Furthermore, Katy ISD is the only district with more than 22,000 students to rank in the state’s Top 10 Best School Districts in Texas, and ranks in the top 1% of all school districts nationally per Niche’s analysis of more than 10,000 districts.
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) released 2025 accountability ratings showing Katy ISD with a ‘B’ rating and a score of 88 — consistent with prior years. More than 60 Katy ISD campuses earned an A or B rating in the most recent cycle. Additionally, Katy ISD serves more than 95,000 students across 80 campuses and is projected to reach 100,000 students by 2027, driven by rapid residential growth in Elyson, Sunterra, Cross Creek Ranch, and surrounding communities.
New campuses — schools opening and planned for the Katy corridor
Two new Katy ISD elementary schools opened in August 2025, responding to enrollment growth in the northwest quadrant of the district. Specifically, Alfred and Ann Boudny Elementary (serving the Elyson area at 7402 Katy Hockley Cut Off Road) and Cross Elementary both opened with capacity for approximately 1,368 to 1,386 students each. Furthermore, Nelson Junior High opened in Fall 2024 near the Sunterra master-planned community to alleviate crowding at Adams and Stockdick Junior High schools.
Looking ahead, a new junior high school is planned for the Grange community in Katy, with construction anticipated to begin in late 2025 or early 2026 and a tentative opening goal of 2028. This campus will be larger than current district junior highs and will include a public track and tennis courts for community use outside school hours. Additionally, Legacy Virtual High School is launching in Fall 2026 — a district-wide flexible virtual learning option that opens enrollment February 2, 2026 for students across Katy ISD and potentially Texas.
Elyson expansion, RCLCO rankings, and corridor development
Elyson — the 3,642-acre Katy master-planned community created by the developers of Cinco Ranch — was recognized by RCLCO in its Top-Selling Master-Planned Communities of 2025 list alongside Sunterra, Bridgeland, and Tamarron as one of Houston’s strongest communities by sales volume. Specifically, approximately 90% of Elyson’s planned 6,000 single-family homes are within Katy ISD, with the remaining 10% in Waller ISD. Active builder phases, new schools, and a Lifestyle Director managing year-round community programming make Elyson one of the most actively developing communities in the Katy corridor.
The I-10 corridor’s commercial infrastructure continues to develop, with Katy Mills Mall remaining a regional retail anchor, LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch providing upscale dining and shopping, and continued growth in the Cinco Ranch commercial area near Grand Parkway and I-10. Furthermore, the Katy/Fulshear region remains one of the fastest-growing areas in Texas, attracting corporate relocations and residential development that reinforce the corridor’s long-term value trajectory.
